When you are an avid camper, having a reliable cooler is essential. It’s just as important as having a good tent and mattress. Nobody wants to eat spoiled meat or drink warm beer, after all.
If you are using the bargain-store cooler, where the ice melts during a short car ride, then you need to upgrade. And, if you are using foam coolers, just… stop.
The Yeti brand has become synonymous with quality. It’s so popular with glampers that it’s begun to gain a reputation for being overpriced and “not that good.” Well, we put that to the test.
If you are looking for the best cooler for camping or glamping, then keep reading.
What to Look For – What Makes the Best Cooler for Camping?
If your cooler can’t hold ice for at least 24 hours under ideal conditions, then in my opinion it’s worthless. The best cooler for camping is one that can keep drinks and food cold for over two days.
Coolers need to be built to keep animals out. Yeti coolers are known to be the best cooler for camping to keep out bear, raccoons, and other curious critters.
I also think it’s important a cooler can take a beating when it’s transported a lot. I don’t want to be ginger with my stuff. I want to toss my cooler in the bed of the truck without worrying if it’s going to break.
Size is a huge factor when determining which is the best cooler for you. You need something which is big enough to store all your drinks and cold food. You also want something that fits in the vehicle.
Another factor is weight. If you need help getting your cooler in the car, be sure you have someone to help get it out.
One thing Yeti coolers have in spades is the convenience factor. They are designed around your experience. They have accessories available, like dry storage racks and separators. They are also stackable and not too bad to look at.
Want to know what grinds my gears? When the hinges on a cooler lid break. Every time you open your cooler the lid flies off in your hand. This isn’t something you’ll need to worry about with the Yeti Tundra 45, as you’ll see in our review.
So those are some things to keep an eye on, let’s see how the Yeti Tundra 45 stacks up.
The Yeti Tundra 45 Review
What We Love
- Unbelievable Ice Life
- No Plastic Latches
- Sturdy Construction
What We Don’t Love
- No Wheels
I filled this cooler with 18 beers and the rest with ice, per manufacturer instructions. After 24 hours, the ice had barely melted. After five days I still had a solid ice-water ratio, and my beer was more than cold enough to drink. This was in my garage at about 80 degrees.
If the best cooler for camping is one that can take a beating, I think the Yeti Tundra 45 makes the mark. It is built like a military chest, with user complaints in mind.
The hinges are very sturdy, and the walls are thick and insulated. Honestly, if I punctured the side, I’d be willing to bet this cooler would still function.
One of my favorite parts of the Yeti line of coolers is the latch design. These silicone/rubber latches stretch to hold the lid tight against the base. This design also lessens the chances of a latch snapping off accidentally.
Even if you do manage to tear one of the latches, you can get a replacement set fairly cheap.
One of the drawbacks of the Yeti Tundra 45 is there are no wheels. This cooler isn’t huge, but it can become very heavy. Once filled, you can easily get over 50lbs. That’s not too terrible, but I’d prefer to be able to roll it around.
Hefty Hefty Hefty
That brings up another point. Most Yeti coolers are heavy, and the Tundra 45 is no exception. This is the price of quality. Similar to furniture, if you want a good cooler, buy a heavy one.
With those points aside, the Yeti Tundra 45 is still a great cooler, and one of the best coolers for campers in 2019 for sure. It has a phenomenal ice life, great storage, an is built to last.
If you are looking to invest in the best cooler for camping, the Yeti Tundra 45 is the cooler you are looking for.
